Dear readers,
October means breast cancer awareness month and as a medical student this topic is close to my heart.
Not only am I concerned with public health , breast cancer unfortunately also runs in my family.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and 1/7 women will get breast cancer in their life.
This is a lot and unfortunately a very sad truth… ?
Unfortunately we can’t control the prevalence of breast cancer but we can do everything to support women in their fight to breast cancer.
We can also educate women to do a monthly self examination so that breast cancer can be detected as early as possible.
Early detection means higher survival rates and less suffering, so it is really important!
How to do self-examination of your breasts:
- Every month, around 2-3 days after your periods: move your fingertips in a circular motion over the breasts to feel for any masses that shouldn’t be there.
- Examine for skin color or texture.
- Examine for dips and lumps in the mirror.
- Last but not least, examine for nipple dips, color change or leaking.
One of my favorite lingerie brands Hunkemo?ller has collaborated with Pink Ribbon this month to create a new PINK lingerie set.
10% of the profits of the sales of that lingerie set will go directly to Pink Ribbon and therefore to the support of women fighting breast cancer.
I think that is a great initiative especially because every women needs some great lingerie and if you can support a great cause, why not right??
Hunkemo?ller also wants to help spread awareness about breast cancer and the impact it can have on a woman’s life.
Watch this video below about a strong woman who has survived breast cancer. So inspiring!!
