Choosing the Best Plastic Surgeon for Your Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide

VIDEO:

Disclaimer: Please note that this blog post and video are focused specifically on surgical procedures (such as for example rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, liposuction, facelift,…) and the process of selecting a plastic surgeon for such procedures. It does not cover non-invasive aesthetic procedures, including injectables such as Botox and fillers. While these non-invasive treatments are popular and effective, they do not fall under the category of surgery.

In today’s world, finding the perfect plastic surgeon can be overwhelming due to the abundance of online content and social media promotions. However, if you’re considering getting plastic surgery abroad, you can check out this blog post and video to get more information. Here are some valuable tips to help you choose the right plastic surgeon for your surgery.

1. Research Surgeon’s Credentials and Experience

Look for a surgeon who has completed their medical degree and specialized training in plastic surgery. Check if they are affiliated with reputable medical associations or societies related to plastic surgery in their country. This demonstrates their lack of history in malpractice claims or disciplinary actions and verifies their training, skills, and experience. Research their educational background, training, and any additional certifications they may have obtained. This information can often be found online through a simple Google search.

However, it is not always necessary to exclusively seek a plastic surgeon. For example, for facial surgery, there are often highly skilled ENT or oral and maxillofacial surgeons who also excel in performing these procedures. In some cases, ophthalmologists may even specialize in blepharoplasties. Nonetheless, it is crucial to conduct thorough research and ensure their experience with these specific procedures aligns with your needs.

2. Social Media Profile

Plastic surgeons are increasingly using social media platforms like Instagram. However, it’s important to recognize that a large following or numerous likes does not necessarily indicate their surgical skills. It often reflects effective marketing rather than expertise. Therefore, it’s crucial not to solely rely on social media content when making a decision.

Nonetheless, you can gather some information about a surgeon from their social media posts. Reviewing their before-and-after pictures can give you insights into their aesthetic style. However, keep in mind that these images typically showcase their best results and may not represent the average outcome. When examining the photos, pay attention to consistent lighting across different cases. Additionally, try to find before photos that resemble your own situation to better understand what the surgeon could potentially achieve for you.

Furthermore, you can gain some understanding of the surgeon’s approach and values through their online posts and statements. This can help you gauge if their philosophy aligns with your preferences. However, it remains crucial to meet the surgeon in person to assess your comfort level and establish a rapport before making a final decision.

3. Experience with specific type of surgery that you’re looking for

When selecting a plastic surgeon, it is crucial to prioritize their experience and expertise in the specific type of surgery you are seeking. Inquire about their training and the frequency with which they perform the procedure, as this indicates their level of proficiency. Ideally, you want a surgeon who has conducted the surgery numerous times, demonstrating their mastery.

Additionally, conducting online research can provide further insights into a surgeon’s experience. Look for published articles, research papers, or case studies they have authored, as these can offer valuable information about their skills and knowledge in the field.

It is important to note that not all surgeons excel in every type of surgery. Specialization is common, with surgeons often focusing on specific procedures. For instance, a surgeon who rarely performs nose jobs may not possess the same level of expertise as one who regularly conducts them. Thus, it is vital to choose a surgeon with extensive experience in the particular surgery you desire. This ensures optimal results and instills confidence in your decision.

4. Match Aesthetic Vision

Plastic surgery combines medical expertise with artistic vision. Therefore, it is essential to find a plastic surgeon whose aesthetic style aligns with your desired outcome. Some surgeons prioritize achieving a natural look, while others may lean towards more dramatic results. If you are seeking a subtle change, it is advisable not to choose a surgeon known for producing significant transformations. For instance, if you desire a modest breast enhancement as an A cup, it would be wise to avoid surgeons who primarily specialize in larger breast augmentations.

Each individual’s body is unique, and the “best” surgeon for you is the one who understands your goals and can tailor the procedure to meet your specific needs. Simply searching for “best plastic surgeons near me” and selecting the first option may not guarantee the most suitable match.

It’s worth taking the time to do some research and explore before-and-after photos to get a sense of a surgeon’s style. Don’t hesitate to meet with different surgeons to see if they can deliver what you’re looking for. It’s important to find a surgeon who sees things the way you do to achieve the best results from your surgery.

5. Consult Multiple Surgeons

To make the best decision, it’s a good idea to schedule consultations with multiple plastic surgeons. This way, you can compare their advice, assess their skills, and find the one who suits your needs and makes you feel most comfortable. Trust your instincts when selecting the surgeon you feel most confident in.

6. Seek Referrals

When you’re searching for a plastic surgeon, referrals can be a valuable tool. Ask people you trust like your family, friends, or even other healthcare providers if they can recommend a good surgeon. This is useful because these people can share their personal experiences with the surgeon’s skills, professionalism, and the quality of the patient care provided.

Recommendations from those who have had a positive experience with a surgeon are particularly valuable. They can offer firsthand insight into what you might expect in terms of care and results. Moreover, knowing that a surgeon has already established a solid reputation among people you trust can increase your confidence in their abilities. Therefore, don’t underestimate the importance of personal referrals in your search for the right plastic surgeon.

7. Check Patient Reviews

In our digital world, you can often find online reviews of plastic surgeons. Websites like realself.com and different forums let people share their experiences with surgeons. But remember, approach these reviews with care.

Some surgeons may try to change their reviews, adding fake positive ones. On the flip side, competition might lead other surgeons to post fake negative reviews out of jealousy. This makes it hard to know if all reviews are true. Similarly, take negative reviews with a pinch of salt.  Sometimes, patients might be unhappy for reasons beyond the surgeon’s control, like having expectations that are too high, or mental health issues like body dysmorphic disorder.

When you read patient reviews, remember to take them with a grain of salt. If you can, reach out to people who wrote reviews to learn more about their experiences. Talking with past patients can give you a deeper understanding of the surgeon’s skill, professionalism, and how they take care of patients.

Use reviews as a tool to learn more, but be careful and don’t only rely on them.

8. Talk about Possible Complications

Always make sure the surgeon you choose talks about the risks that come with surgery. Every surgery has its risks, and it’s important that your surgeon doesn’t sugarcoat it. If a surgeon says they never have complications, be careful. Even the best surgeons can face complications.

Sadly, from my experience, a lot of plastic surgeons don’t talk enough about possible complications and the downsides of plastic surgery. They might be worried about scaring off patients, and on social media, they usually just talk about the good things about surgery. This is one reason why I make videos like this one.

I think that you can only make a well-informed choice if you understand both the good and the bad about the surgery. So, if you want to learn more about the pros and cons of plastic surgery, make sure to subscribe to my channel and blog for more videos and blog posts.

9. Consider the Surgeon’s Communication Style

It’s important to feel comfortable with the surgeon’s way of talking. Good communication is key in plastic surgery because they need to understand what you hope to achieve, which can be different for everyone. When you talk with surgeons, consider:

  1. Sharing Thoughts: The surgeon should really listen to your ideas, desires, and feelings about the operation. You should feel heard and, together, decide if plastic surgery is right for you.
  2. No Rush: If a surgeon seems rushed and doesn’t take time for your questions, be wary. They should explain why they suggest a certain procedure and how it matches your goals.
  3. Consultation, Not Sales (!!!): Talking to a surgeon shouldn’t feel like a sales pitch where they try to sell you various procedures. Instead, it should be a real conversation about your needs. Sometimes they might suggest other procedures that could help. For example, if you want a nose job and have a small chin, they might suggest a chin implant. A small chin can sometimes make your nose look bigger than it really is.

I know from my experience that some really skilled plastic surgeons who get great results aren’t that good with patients and don’t show a lot of empathy. They might see you more as a case than a person with feelings. But you need to decide for yourself if this would bother you. In the end, trust your gut when you make your final choice!

10. Check the Surgeon’s Honesty

Honesty is key when choosing a plastic surgeon. They should be able to give you a realistic idea of what can be achieved based on your unique situation. If certain results you’re hoping for aren’t possible or safe, a good surgeon will tell you. It’s important to find a surgeon who can agree on your goals and be honest with you about what can be done.

11. Learn About the Team and Anesthesiologist

Make sure you ask about the team that’ll help with your surgery. This includes knowing what the nurses and technicians will be doing. It’s good to know about their experience and skills because it can help you feel better about the care you’ll get.

Also, ask about who’ll be in charge of your anesthesia. It’s normal to be worried about this. Find out about the anesthesiologist’s or nurse anesthetist’s qualifications and experience. Knowing a skilled person will be taking care of this can help you feel less worried.

By talking about these things with your surgeon and knowing about the team, you can feel more confident and calm about your surgery.

12. Check Hospital Quality and Care

It’s key to look into the hospital or surgery center when choosing a plastic surgeon. See if it’s certified and accredited by the right medical groups. Do some research on its reputation and check if it has the specialized equipment and services needed. Also, look into what they offer for your comfort. Doing this helps make sure you get the best care during your procedure.
